What Are Common Medical School Policies on Accepting International Students?

Since medical schools in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean have differing policies in relation to accepting international students, applicants should visit the institution’s website and review their admissions policies prior to applying to any medical school.

• The applicant must have completed undergraduate coursework at an accredited college or university.
• The applicant must demonstrate his or her ability to speak fluent English. An applicant proves his or her fluency by taking the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination.

The Primary Medical School Application Process for International Students

Application processes vary by medical school, particularly for applicants who completed undergraduate coursework outside the United States or Canada. International applicants may be required to submit a credential evaluation of their academic records in addition to transcripts and other application materials.

Trinity applicants can apply directly through Trinity's online application. Applicants may also submit a current and processed AMCAS, AACOMAS, TMDSAS, or OMSAS application in PDF form. Applicants who attended foreign institutions must provide an undergraduate credit evaluation.

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT®)

MCAT® requirements vary by medical school and applicant. At Trinity, MCAT® scores are required for U.S. citizens, nationals, and eligible permanent resident applicants and encouraged for other applicants. While the results of this examination are important, Trinity School of Medicine takes a holistic approach to evaluating candidates for admission, considering factors such as research experience, academic accomplishments, and admissions interviews.
