Beyond the Classroom: A Student’s Experience on a World Pediatrics Mission

Through its partnership with World Pediatrics, Trinity School of Medicine provides students with unique opportunities to learn beyond the classroom while giving back to the communities they serve. World Pediatrics helps connect children in underserved communities with specialized medical care that may otherwise be unavailable, bringing experienced medical teams together to provide surgical, rehabilitative, and follow-up care.

For Trinity students, participating in a World Pediatrics mission offers a firsthand look at patient-centered care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the impact physicians can have on children and their families. These experiences allow students to observe medical professionals in a clinical setting while gaining a deeper understanding of compassionate care and the importance of expanding access to healthcare.

For one Trinity medical student, Hannah Chung, the experience offered a powerful perspective on the meaning of service and the lasting impact of medicine:

"Walking into the outpatient clinic, I did not anticipate having such a meaningful and humbling experience. During the morning shift, I encountered approximately 17 pediatric patients who visited for consultations, either as follow-up appointments or in preparation for upcoming surgeries. Many of the children arrived using crutches or wearing braces, each one hopeful for procedures that could significantly enhance their quality of life.  

World Pediatrics plays a vital role in making these opportunities possible by helping children in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines access specialized care that would otherwise remain unavailable. I had the privilege of shadowing Dr. Gordon and Dr. Meg from Shriners Hospitals for Children in St. Louis, along with their dedicated team, which included Nurse Jill, Anesthesiologist Dr. Lockhart, and Physical Therapist Donna. This medical team provides not only surgical interventions but also essential preoperative and postoperative care.

Dr. Gordon, who has been visiting Saint Vincent for the past 15 years, has built long-standing relationships with his patients. He described his work as offering "no delayed gratification," a phrase that deeply resonated with me. Witnessing the team in action was a powerful reminder of the profound and lasting impact of medicine when delivered with both skill and compassion.

This experience allowed me to observe the practical application of medical knowledge in a clinical setting and to witness firsthand the importance of patient-centered care. I am sincerely grateful to World Pediatrics and Trinity School of Medicine for the opportunity to be part of this invaluable experience."
