According to the AMA, the 2026 Main Residency Match was the largest in NRMP history, with 44,344 positions offered, a 2.6% increase from 2025, 48,050 certified applicants, a 1.8% increase from 2025, and a 93.3% fill rate for PGY-1 positions. The NRMP also reported a record-high 70% PGY-1 match rate for U.S. citizen IMGs in 2026, highlighting the continued role of international medical graduates in the U.S. physician workforce.
